Mechatronics lab

The laboratory is equipped with up-to-date tools for design, prototyping, construction and testing of components and mechatronic systems for agricultural machines and/or food industry.
The laboratory is provided with workstations and softwares for numerical simulations and measurement systems for performance evaluation of machines and components both in mechanics and applied electronics fields.

Area: development and testing of mechatronic systems and devices for agriculture 4.0

Data acquisition systems (temperature, humidity, electronic pulse, voltage, current, etc.)

  • 4 Datalogger DataTaker D65, Delta Instruments
  • NI Compact DAQ Controller NIcDAQ-9132, with NI9220, NI9222, NI9411, NI9862, NI9375 card
  • NI FieldPoint RealTime with 8 thermocouple module (8 channel each), analogic and digital I/O modules
  • OnSetComp HOBO systems for temperature, relative humidity, motor on/off and electrical contact closure measurement
  • ADAM datalogger for thermocouple.
Mechanical stress acquisition systems
  • Three-point hitch frame ASABE S278.7 compliant (ISO11001-1:1993)
  • 2 Torsiometer for universal joint (1500 and 3000 nanometre full scale)
  • 3 Biaxial dynamometer category 3 pin (10000 kilograms full scale for each axis).
Optical thermography
  • AVIO TVS500E Infrared Thermal Camera
  • OpTris infrared thermometer with zoom lens and laser pointer.
Electronics development and prototyping
  • Tektronix TDS2002 digital oscilloscope
  • Instek GDM-8245 desktop digital multimeter
  • Fluke portable digital multimeter
  • Weller soldering station
  • Hot air soldering/de-soldering station for SMD components
  • Development systems for Arduino, ST Nucleo and Raspberry microcontrollers
  • 3 laboratory power supply; inverter and battery charger.
Mechanical prototyping
  • Shaping tools (lathe, milling machine, drill press, belt saw, miter saw for wood cutting)
  • Fully equipped mechanic workshop.
Automatic identification systems based on RFID technology
  • Minimum RF power level automatic measurement test bench for RFID tag readability assessment
  • CAEN R4300P UHF reader
  • Linear and circular polarisation CAEN antenna
  • Readers and antenna for LF, HF and UHF RFID systems.
Development, calculation and simulation software
  • Matlab R2019a (OS version)
  • COMSOL Multiphysics® 5.4 (OS version)
  • Agisoft PhotoScan
  • NI LabView 2017.
Additional equipment
  • ACCULAB SVI-100E weight scale, 100 kilograms full scale, 0.002 kilograms resolution
  • Refrigerator and freezer for food sample storage
  • Image acquisition box with controlled lighting system for food product quality control; Nikon D5100 digital camera
  • Electric steam generator (up to 0.5 kilograms per hour)
  • Remote controlled electric 4WD vehicle for offroad and agricultural applications, with housing for field testing devices, 600 kilograms payload.

The laboratory deals with:
  • design, prototyping and testing of mechatronics systems and components for agricultural machinery and food industry, in laboratory and field conditions
  • systems for design and simulation of mechatronics devices in agriculture 4.0 context
  • innovative algorithms development ad test for data processing of multi/iper spectral, thermal and Lidar sensors
  • 3D targets and scenario modelling in agriculture by means of photogrammetry and/or multispectral technology
  • performance assessment of conventional and electric agricultural machinery
  • development and testing of systems for automatic identification of food products by means of RFID technology
  • anti-counterfeiting system development and testing.

Laboratory admission is available upon reservation, accompanied by authorized staff.
Rates and access conditions are defined according to specific needs.
